Tool Box: The HandyBar.. and it’s just that!

Living with a chronic illness or disability brings daily challenges. The good news is that there are many products and services available on the market to make your life easier. With the thousands of products on the market, it is important not to waste your time of money on the wrong product or service. As an Occupational Therapists, and Independent Living Specialists, I work daily helping clients select the products and services to help them continue to live at home.

One product that has been helpful for many clients is the HandyBar. It is an inexpensive lever that can be placed into the door frame of any car. The lever or handle provides a place to put you hand as you stand up from a car seat.

This product is most beneficial to those with leg weakness, put fairly strong upper body strength and hand grasp.

The HandyBar company has also created a car transfer disc. This disc makes it easier to bring your legs into and out of the car. When you sit on the disc (which is soft and comfortable), it easily turns making it easier to get your legs into the car. allowing your legs to get into the car. Even if you are unable to lift your legs, this disc can help. In fact, I have recommended this product most often for caregivers. It reduces effort  needed to help with car transfers.

Who Should Use it?

This tool will be useful to anyone who suffers from:

  • Leg Weakness
  • Arthritis affecting their knees or hips
  • Impaired balance associated with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, and Stroke
  • Difficulty standing up from a low surface.

Summary: The HandyBar and HandyBar Car Transfer Disc, an similar products can be used to make getting into and out of the car easier. It is easy to use, fits all cars and is portable. Costs for each is $35.
